The story of
Blyth Star

I believe that anybody who comes to Blyth Star Enterprises should have a better life because they came.

Our story begins in the mid-1980s

When a group of senior mental health practitioners, social workers, parents and carers came together to discuss the possibility of creating a community-based service in Blyth for individuals with mental health needs.

At the time, mental health services didn’t exist outside of the confines of a psychiatric hospital, so the very idea of a provision in the community seemed radical, but with pressure on health services rising, it was agreed that a service would be established in a charitable capacity in partnership with local authorities. Blyth Star Enterprises was born and our story begins.

Growth and Expansion

Our Living Support service was established first, with a number of service users moving from St George’s Hospital into our first block of supported living accommodation on Middleton Street in Blyth in 1987. The day services were close behind with the launch of a social care day service within Blyth’s former maternity hospital, Beulah House, in 1989 and the relocation of the gardening service from St George’s to a disused horticultural site in Stakeford, which would later become Stakeford Nurseries as it exists today.

The rest of Blyth Star’s services – The Woodfuel Centre, Woodwork Department, outreach services and in-house training programmes developed organically in the years that followed as the charity adapted itself to meet the needs of the individuals that we support, which by the early 2000s had expanded to include people with learning disabilities as well as mental health needs.

Supporting Individuals Throughout Northumberland

Today, Blyth Star Enterprises' story continues. We now support over 300 individuals across Northumberland through our various Living Support and Day Services. While our service provision may have changed, the beliefs that founded our organisation have remained the same, everyone deserves Somewhere to Live, Somewhere to Work and Someone to Care.
