The range of services that we provide work together to provide a holistic approach to community-based support for individuals living with complex mental health needs and learning disabilities.

Based on a modular framework similar to that of a vocational qualification, Blyth Star Enterprises offers two different in-house training programmes to its service users who attend Stakeford Nurseries, The Woodfuel Centre and Woodwork Department day services.
Delivered over the course of two-years by a dedicated trainer, the horticulture programme at Stakeford Nurseries covers a variety of topics from plant propagation techniques, how to identify different species of plant and the basics of how ecosystems work. The woodfuel and woodwork programme explores machine operation, health and safety, fork lift truck driving, practical DIY and warehousing processes.
Both programmes have been purposely designed to cover all of the aspects of work in a plant nursery or factory and workshop environment to give service users the knowledge and skills they need to succeed in their ‘role’ at their respective day services.
In 2023, our in-house training programmes received endorsement from the Awarding Organisation, NOCN, to provide service users with the opportunity to gain certificates as they learn new skills.
Service users’ progress is assessed and monitored through a personal learning profile which tracks their development through each module, and also considers how the individual’s social skills, communication skills and confidence improve throughout the course.

Training OpportunitiesBlyth Star offers a unique, two-fold approach to day service provision. Our social care day service at The Steamboat in Blyth supports adults at risk of social isolation and mental health deterioration by providing a programme of engaging activities that promote social integration and independent living skills.
Operating alongside this service, we have two community enterprises – Stakeford Nurseries and The Woodfuel Centre. Our day services at Stakeford Nurseries and The Woodfuel Centre provide training opportunities and simulated work experience for those who need vocational support and would otherwise find it difficult to enter competitive employment.

Our Day ServicesIndependent Supported Living is a service that helps people to retain their independence while still having the benefit of the physical and emotional support they need to lead fulfilled lives in their own homes.
The individuals receiving ISL care live in designated housing within our purpose-built apartment buildings – Custom House and Bradbury’s Old Chandlery. In this setting, service users have their own tenancy agreements and have full control over their bills, household chores and other responsibilities that are involved with living in their own home, but with the benefit of additional support available around the clock should they need it.
Support is provided separately to maximise service user’s independence and if they have any particular wishes or needs, to support them in achieving their goals.
In addition to the apartments available within Custom House and Bradbury’s Old Chandlery, Blyth Star Enterprises own a number of properties within the community which are made available to service users who are ready to take the next step toward living independently. Each property comes with a minimum of five hours’ support per week which can be tailored according to the person’s needs.

Our Living SupportBlyth Star Enterprises Outreach Service is a provision offered to individuals who require support in managing their day-to-day lives, who benefit from a package of support delivered within their own home.
Covering the whole of Northumberland, our outreach services are arranged in hourly packages according to a person’s assessed needs, as agreed by a Social Worker or Care Manager.
Outreach support can be offered in several capacities – and the intensity and frequency of visits will depend on individual circumstances and the level of need. Some people may need intensive support for a short period of time, whereas others may need low-level, long-term support.
Available to all individuals who have complex mental health needs and learning disabilities, the main advantage of outreach support is that it is carried out in a person’s own home, eliminating the need for them to spend large amounts of time in a hospital or similar care environment and enabling them to stay in their own home indefinitely.
The level of support provided by our outreach team varies from client to client. For some of our service users, our outreach support workers simply provide companionship, for others, they provide much needed help with everyday tasks such as food shopping.
