At Blyth Star Enterprises, we are always on the lookout for new and innovative ways to generate income to help us to continue to operate our services.
Donations from the public are always a welcome boost and enable us to go above and beyond for our service users to continuously develop our offer and provide new and innovative experiences.
Last month, Blyth Star Enterprises received a donation for £803.07 via the online crowdfunding site, JustGiving, seemingly from an anonymous source. It then came to light that the daughter of one of our trustees had taken part in the Paris Marathon in our honour!
This is Emma’s story…
“I had always wanted to take part in a marathon or some kind of endurance event,” Emma said.
“I started doing some research into various different options, looking at marathons and triathlons and other challenges like Tough Mudder. I was originally hoping to secure a place in the London Marathon but I ended up heading for Paris!
“I had already decided that I was going to use the event to raise money for Blyth Star Enterprises. My Dad has been a trustee of the charity since its inception over 30 years ago so I have grown up hearing about all of the amazing work that they do to help people living with severe learning disabilities and long-term mental health problems. It was an easy choice.
“I set up a JustGiving page once I had my place confirmed with an aim of raising £500. I left the page running during my five months of training and I also hosted an ‘Easter Tea and Toasties’ morning at the village hall where I live in Longhorsely, Northumberland, where we also had a raffle with some great prizes donated by local businesses.
“The marathon took place on Sunday 8th April 2018. It was absolutely exhausting but I thoroughly enjoyed it and I was extremely proud of myself when I got to the finish line, knowing what I had achieved for Blyth Star.
“Gordon and the team at Blyth Star have been really gracious and I’d like to thank everyone who sponsored and supported me. The funds raised have gone to an amazing cause and I will definitely look to support them again in the future.”
On behalf of the staff and service users at Blyth Star Enterprises, I’d like to personally thank Emma for her hard work and incredibly kind donation.
